Guterres commends US diplomatic push
Guterres said in a post on X that he welcomes the ceasefire and prisoner swap, noting that the UN fully supports implementation of the agreement. "I commend the efforts of the USA in facilitating this agreement," he stated, emphasizing the need for an immediate and unconditional cessation of hostilities.
The secretary-general reiterated his appeal for a "full, unconditional and lasting ceasefire" as a first step toward a just and sustainable peace compliant with the UN Charter. The temporary truce is set to run from May 9 through May 11, coinciding with Russia's Victory Day commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany.

Trump heralds breakthrough
Trump announced the agreement Friday on Truth Social, stating that Russia and Ukraine had committed to the three-day pause and a 1,000-for-1,000 prisoner swap. "Hopefully, it is the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and hard fought War," he said, adding that daily negotiations are bringing the sides closer to ending the conflict he described as the largest since World War II.
