US calls on Israel to clear Gaza war debris: Report

According to a report in Israel's Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, the United States has requested that Israel manage the clearance of vast amounts of rubble across the Gaza Strip.
Massive scale of destruction and costThe scale of the challenge is monumental. Recent estimates, including one from The Wall Street Journal, suggest Gaza is buried under approximately 68 million tons of rubble. The UN Development Program illustrates this by comparing the weight to 186 Empire State Buildings. Clearing the entire enclave is projected to take years and cost over $1 billion, a sum international and Arab donors have so far been unwilling to fund.
A pilot project in Rafah
Facing this staggering task and a lack of external funding, Israel's initial commitment is limited. Citing a senior political source, the Israeli daily reports the cleanup will start with a single neighborhood in the southern city of Rafah. This pilot phase alone is expected to cost between tens and hundreds of millions of shekels, indicating the financial enormity of a full-scale operation.
The humanitarian backdrop
The discussion over debris removal occurs against a devastating humanitarian backdrop. Since October 2023, the conflict has led to significant loss of life and injury in Gaza, with Palestinian health authorities reporting more than 70,300 killed and over 171,000 wounded. The issue of reconstruction, starting with rubble clearance, remains a critical point in diplomatic talks, with observers from Türkiye and elsewhere emphasizing the urgent need for sustainable recovery and accountability.
