The US and Iran have signalled potential compromise on uranium enrichment despite failing to reach a final agreement during weekend talks in Islamabad, the Wall Street Journal reported. Washington demands a 20‑year freeze and total removal of enriched material, while Tehran proposes a five‑year pause with the stockpile remaining inside Iran.

The United States and Iran have shown a degree of flexibility in their diplomatic standoff despite failing to reach a final agreement during weekend negotiations in Pakistan, the Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday. People familiar with the talks said both sides demonstrated willingness to compromise, with discussions specifically addressing the core issue of uranium enrichment. While the first round of direct talks in Islamabad ended without a deal, participants are expected to meet for further sessions soon.

Core Demands and Counter‑Proposals

Washington’s core demands include the removal of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile, estimated at around 450 kilograms enriched to 60%, much of which lies buried under nuclear sites already struck during the US‑Israeli offensive. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said Iran will hand over the stockpile voluntarily or the US will take it by other means. President Trump has demanded a 20‑year freeze on enrichment and the total removal of the material from Iranian soil. Tehran has countered with a proposed five‑year pause while insisting that the stockpile stay within its borders.

Next Steps

White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said the next round of ceasefire discussions is expected to take place in Islamabad. Neither capital has formally confirmed the reported progress. Türkiye, which has consistently supported de‑escalation and diplomatic engagement, continues to coordinate with regional partners to help stabilise the situation. The war that began on 28 February has triggered the biggest energy shock in decades, with oil prices surging and global supply chains under severe strain.
