The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday that the extensive deployment of advanced weaponry in Washington's war against Iran has severely depleted American military stockpiles, limiting the Pentagon's capacity to deter threats from China and Russia. Military planners told the newspaper that the resource drain has compelled US European Command to adjust its operational plans across the continent, with some analysts warning that the current trajectory could undermine NATO's collective defense posture in the near term.

US officials assessed that Washington could not fully execute contingency plans to defend Taiwan — the self-governing island over which China claims sovereignty — if a military operation occurs in the short term, according to the report. The movement of air defense units from Japan, South Korea and Germany to the Middle East has created "soft spots" in the American global military posture that could take years to refill, officials said, noting that the redistribution leaves key allies exposed in the Indo-Pacific and European theaters simultaneously.

Munitions Crisis

Inventories in Europe of PAC-3 Patriot interceptors and ATACMS surface-to-surface missiles are considered at "beyond critical" levels, some officials said. Additionally, THAAD anti-missile interceptors and counter-drone systems have been redirected to the Middle East, further diminishing continental supplies and sharply restricting the ability of Western nations to send interceptors to Ukraine as Russian missile attacks continue unabated.

The White House and the Pentagon have officially denied any munition scarcity, according to the report.
