US negotiators will demand the release of American citizens imprisoned in Iran during Saturday’s high‑stakes talks in Islamabad, the Washington Post reported. At least six US nationals are known to be detained in Iran, though it remains unclear how much pressure officials will apply on the issue.

American negotiators are expected to raise the issue of US detainees held in Iran during the landmark talks scheduled for Saturday in Pakistan’s capital, the Washington Post reported, citing sources familiar with the matter. Officials from the Trump administration will demand the release of American citizens imprisoned in Iran, though it remains unclear how much pressure they will apply on this issue. Some officials suggested the request could be postponed if negotiations become difficult. According to the report, at least six US citizens are known to be detained in Iran.

Ceasefire and Broader Agenda

The detainee issue will be part of a broader agenda as the United States and Iran meet face‑to‑face for the first time since the outbreak of war on 28 February. The US and Israel launched their offensive against Iran under the pretext of destroying its nuclear programme. Tehran retaliated with drone and missile strikes against Israel and US assets in the region, while also restricting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, driving up global energy prices.

Pakistan’s Mediating Role

Pakistan mediated a two‑week ceasefire earlier this week and is hosting the current talks aimed at reaching a permanent end to the conflict. Türkiye, together with China, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, also played a supporting role in brokering the temporary truce. The release of American detainees would be a significant humanitarian gesture and could help build trust between the two sides as they negotiate a lasting peace.
