US urges citizens in Iraq to ‘leave now’ over militia threats

The US Embassy in Baghdad renewed its Iraq travel warning, urging American citizens to “leave now.” The embassy said Iran-aligned militias continue to plan attacks on US nationals and interests, with some elements of the Iraqi government providing political, financial, and operational cover. Commercial flights have resumed, but missile and drone risks remain.
The US Embassy in Baghdad issued an urgent security alert on Monday, renewing its warning against all travel to Iraq and instructing American citizens already in the country to depart immediately. “Do not travel to Iraq for any reason. Leave now if you are there,” the embassy said. The alert cited ongoing threats from Iran-aligned militias that continue to plan attacks targeting US citizens and American-linked interests across Iraq, including in the northern regions. The embassy further alleged that “some elements associated with the Iraqi government continue to actively provide political, financial, and operational cover for these terrorist militias.”
Security risks and limited flights
While Iraqi airspace has reopened and limited commercial flights are now operating, the embassy warned that Americans considering air travel should remain aware of ongoing risks from missiles, drones, and rockets. “US Mission Iraq remains open while on ordered departure to assist US citizens in Iraq,” the mission said. However, it added: “Do not attempt to come to the Embassy in Baghdad or the Consulate General in Erbil in light of significant security risks,” urging citizens to contact officials electronically instead.
Regional context
The renewed warning comes amid heightened regional hostilities following the US-Israeli joint strikes against Iran on Feb. 28, which prompted Iranian retaliation against Israel and other countries hosting US assets. The war has been on hold since a two-week ceasefire was announced on April 8, mediated by Pakistan.
