US withdraws from strategic al-Tanf base, Syrian army assumes control

Syrian government forces have entered the al-Tanf garrison near the Iraqi and Jordanian borders following a U.S. military withdrawal after nearly a decade of presence. Washington has relocated personnel to a nearby facility in Jordan.
The Syrian Arab Army has taken full control of the strategic al-Tanf base, located at the crossroads of the Syrian, Iraqi and Jordanian borders, following the withdrawal of U.S. forces from the facility. Syrian government sources confirmed to Anadolu on Wednesday that military units have deployed to the base, ending nearly ten years of American presence at the strategic outpost.

US Forces Redeploy to Jordan
U.S. personnel previously stationed at al-Tanf have reportedly relocated to Tower 22, a base situated approximately 22 kilometers from the border inside Jordan, near the demilitarized zone. While an estimated 200 American troops were once based at al-Tanf—particularly after its expansion in 2017 and 2018—no official figures have been released regarding current force levels at the Jordanian facility.

A Hub for Surveillance Operations
Throughout its occupation of al-Tanf, Washington utilized the base as a central node for monitoring activities across a vast stretch of territory extending from the Jordanian frontier to the Euphrates River. Surveillance balloons and advanced reconnaissance systems deployed at the garrison tracked the movements of both Daesh terrorists and Iran-backed factions. The withdrawal marks a significant shift in the U.S. military footprint in eastern Syria.
