Vietnam has suffered devastating losses from natural disasters in 2025, with 409 people confirmed dead or missing and 727 others injured. Vietnam has experienced devastating natural disasters throughout 2025, resulting in hundreds of casualties and billions of dollars in economic damage. Official data reveals 409 people have been reported dead or missing while 727 others sustained injuries from various weather-related catastrophes affecting the Southeast Asian nation.
Widespread Property and Agricultural Damage
The disasters have caused extensive property destruction, with more than 337,000 homes either collapsed, swept away, or suffering varying degrees of damage. Agriculture has been particularly hard hit, with 553,417 hectares of rice and other crops inundated and nearly 377,000 hectares of plantations affected. The cumulative economic impact has reached approximately $3.2 billion, creating significant recovery challenges for affected regions.
Record Storm Season and Recent Flooding
Nguyen Ton Quan, deputy head of the Community Disaster Management and Communications Division, reported at a disaster forecasting forum that Vietnam has faced 19 storms and tropical depressions this year, including 14 typhoons and five tropical depressions. This number approaches the country's all-time record set in 2017. This month alone, heavy flooding in central Vietnam submerged over 200,000 homes and left 102 people dead or missing.
Additional Storm Threat Looms
Meteorological officials warned that the severe weather pattern may continue, with a tropical depression near the Philippines expected to move into Vietnamese waters. This system could potentially strengthen into what would become the 15th storm of Vietnam's 2025 season, posing additional risks to a country already grappling with substantial disaster recovery efforts and humanitarian needs.
