An interim Kazakh investigation finds damage to an Azerbaijan Airlines plane that crashed last year was "presumably caused by striking elements of a warhead." The crash killed 38 and remains a source of tension between Baku and Moscow.

A year after a deadly aircraft crash, Kazakh authorities have released an interim report suggesting the Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) jet was likely struck by elements of an explosive warhead. The investigation states that damage to the Embraer 190 was "presumably caused by striking elements of a warhead," though the precise origin of the fragments has yet to be determined.

Technical findings and ongoing inquiry

The report, issued by Kazakhstan's Ministry of Transport, details that the plane's hydraulic system failed after being penetrated by steel-based metallic objects, which caused critical ruptures. The commission is also examining whether the airline adhered to proper safety protocols for operating near conflict zones. The crash on December 25, 2024, during a flight from Baku to Grozny, resulted in the deaths of 38 people and injuries to 29 others.

Diplomatic fallout between Azerbaijan and Russia

Azerbaijani officials had previously asserted the plane was hit by a missile while flying over the Caspian Sea region. President Ilham Aliyev stated last July that Baku would "apply to international justice" and had informed Russia of its intentions. The Kremlin acknowledged Azerbaijan's right to pursue legal action, noting bilateral relations had entered a "difficult period." Russian President Vladimir Putin later pledged in October that Moscow would do everything possible to provide compensation and assist the investigation.

International investigation and next steps

The multinational investigation includes experts from Azerbaijan, Russia, Brazil, and the United States. As the inquiry continues, it seeks to establish accountability for the incident that has significantly strained regional diplomatic ties.
