Winter storms deepen humanitarian crisis in war-torn Gaza, UN reports

Heavy rains and cold winds are exacerbating the humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip, where the United Nations reports approximately 55,000 families have seen their already damaged shelters further ruined by winter storms. This new layer of suffering comes after two years of intense Israeli military operations that have left the coastal enclave's infrastructure in ruins and its 2.3 million residents overwhelmingly displaced.
UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq, citing reports from the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), provided the damage estimates to journalists in New York. "OCHA estimates that some 55,000 families across Gaza have been affected by the latest rains so far, with their belongings and shelters damaged or destroyed in the storm," Haq stated. He added that dozens of child-friendly spaces were also damaged, disrupting protection services for an estimated 30,000 children and hampering aid groups' efforts to scale up relief operations.
Ongoing Violence Despite Ceasefire
While a ceasefire agreement took effect on October 10, sporadic Israeli attacks have continued. Palestinian sources report that Israeli drone strikes and artillery fire in central Gaza have resulted in numerous civilian casualties in recent days. The fragile truce has not halted all hostilities, nor has it addressed the underlying devastation that makes the population acutely vulnerable to natural elements like winter weather.
The Legacy of Destruction and Suffering
The current crisis is set against a backdrop of massive destruction. Prior to the ceasefire, Israeli airstrikes and ground operations had resulted in tens of thousands of Palestinian casualties and damaged over 90% of structures in Gaza, according to UN assessments. This near-total destruction of the built environment has left the population with minimal protection from the elements, turning seasonal weather into a life-threatening event.
