Defeated Sarıgül urges public to fight for Turkey
The main opposition Republican People''s Party''s mayoral candidate for Istanbul, Mustafa Sarigül pledged to gear himself up for an uphill fight for the future of Turkey in his first statement after his tough rival Kadir Topbas, of the ruling AK Party, took the lead the Sunday''s elections.
Sarigül said he knew well establishing and carving it into stone was not an easy journey. ''The elections has shown us this once again''
''The early results have displayed that there is a tough journey before us for the rights and the freedom, and secularism which respects beliefs. It is our duty to continue this journey for our children to live in a modern Turkey,'' Sarigül said.
The defeated candidate said he actually wished the local elections would have been a milestone for democracy and a clean voting process.
''However, the difficulties we have faced during the election campaign, closure of Youtube and Twitter, assault on the party''s election offices and fake news about our campaign have prevented a clean, legal and unquestioned process.''
Sarigül said the main opposition has gained the highest voting rate Istanbul so far but it was not a consolidation for being defeated in the 30 March elections.
''Taking shelter in excuses does not match with my political character. What we are to do is holding each other more tightly than ever and to work more ambitious then were in the past,'' he added.
