Somali referee denied US entry for World Cup receives hero’s welcome

Somali referee Omar Artan promised to officiate at the next FIFA World Cup upon his return to Mogadishu, where senior officials welcomed him after a US entry denial — based on a presidential proscription suspending Somali nationals — blocked him from becoming the first Somali official at the 2026 tournament.
Senior government officials including Sports Minister Mohamed Abdulkadir Ali and Defense Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi joined representatives from the Somali Football Federation to greet Artan upon his arrival in the capital. The delegation gathered at Adan Adde International Airport to welcome the official home after his historic opportunity was blocked by American immigration restrictions.
Speaking at a press conference following his arrival, Artan thanked FIFA and the Somali people for their sustained support during the ordeal. "I can promise you that I will officiate at the next FIFA World Cup," he said, expressing determination to overcome the diplomatic setback and fulfill his ambition of officiating on football's biggest stage.
US entry ban blocks historic assignment
Artan had been selected to become the first Somali referee in history to officiate at a FIFA World Cup before the denial prevented his participation. President Donald Trump issued a proclamation on June 4 fully suspending the entry of Somali nationals into the United States as both immigrants and nonimmigrants, a measure that directly impacted the official's travel plans.
The denial sparked international uproar among football supporters, with some fans calling for a boycott of the tournament in response to the restriction. The Somali Football Federation described Artan's journey as "a source of pride for Somalia, CECAFA and African football" despite the circumstances preventing his World Cup debut.
Continental recognition amid controversy
The Confederation of African Football recently named Artan as the continent's Best Referee for 2025, recognizing his professional achievements prior to the visa controversy. Artan maintained a positive outlook regarding his future in the sport, stating earlier that he remained focused on upcoming challenges in his refereeing career.
