Iran says US removed World Cup ticket quota for its fans, calls on FIFA to act

Iran’s football federation announced that the US has removed the ticket quota allocated to Iranian fans for the World Cup, leaving the federation unable to distribute tickets through its official system. The federation had already begun selling tickets for matches against New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt. Iran called on FIFA to uphold impartiality and justice.
Iran’s football federation said on Tuesday that the United States has removed the ticket quota allocated to Iranian fans for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, making it impossible for the federation to distribute tickets through its official channels. According to Iran’s Tasnim news agency, FIFA regulations allocate 8% of ticket capacity for each match to the participating national federations, allowing fans to purchase tickets through an official mechanism coordinated with their federations. The Iranian federation had already begun selling tickets via its official website for Iran’s matches against New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt after receiving its allocated quota.
Political interference
The federation said the quota was later removed, leaving Iranian fans unable to obtain even a single ticket through official channels. Many Iranian fans had already made travel plans based on the previously announced process. Depriving Iranian fans of access to the legal ticket quota runs counter to the spirit of international competitions and the principle of equality, the report said. The move raises serious questions about whether non-sporting and political considerations have affected the organization of the world’s biggest football event. FIFA and tournament organizers were urged to uphold impartiality and ensure Iranian fans can exercise their legal rights.
