UEFA has sharply criticized FIFA’s decision to suspend the automatic red-card ban imposed on US striker Folarin Balogun, arguing that the move weakens football’s disciplinary framework during an ongoing World Cup. The dispute has also drawn reactions from the European Commission and the Belgian football federation over transparency and sporting integrity.

UEFA has intensified its criticism of FIFA after the world governing body suspended the automatic one-match ban issued to United States forward Folarin Balogun following his red card at the FIFA World Cup. The European football body argued that the decision jeopardizes the consistency of football regulations and raises broader concerns over the integrity of the tournament.UEFA warns of dangerous precedent

In a strongly worded statement, UEFA said FIFA had "crossed a red line" by placing the mandatory suspension on probation for one year. According to UEFA, an automatic suspension following a red card is a fundamental element of football's disciplinary system and should not be subject to exceptions, particularly while a major international competition is underway.

The organization stressed that altering the application of established rules after other players have already served identical suspensions damages legal certainty within the sport. UEFA warned that similar incidents during the remainder of the World Cup could now trigger demands for equal treatment, potentially affecting the credibility of the competition.

European Commission calls for transparency

Responding to questions during Monday's press briefing, European Commission spokesperson Eva Hrncirova avoided commenting directly on Balogun's case but underlined that sports governing bodies should exercise their autonomy through objective and transparent decision-making.

"We respect the autonomy of sports," Hrncirova said, adding that participation rules should be determined according to "objective and transparent criteria." She also reaffirmed the European Commission's broader support for fair play and transparent competition across international sport.

Belgian federation challenges FIFA process

The Royal Belgian Football Association (KBVB) also questioned FIFA's handling of the case, saying it had requested the governing body's formal decision and procedural clarification but instead found its request treated as an appeal.

According to the federation, FIFA appointed an arbitrator and allowed only a limited period for a response without first providing the detailed reasoning required under its own regulations. The association further claimed that references to automatic suspensions had been removed from match coordination materials before the knockout fixture and said requests for clarification went unanswered.

KBVB stated that it continues to dispute Balogun's eligibility for the Round of 16 match against Belgium, while emphasizing that it will continue defending the principles of ethics, fair competition and the integrity of football regardless of the sporting outcome.

Balogun cleared to face Belgium

FIFA confirmed on Sunday that Balogun's automatic suspension would be placed on probation for one year, allowing the 25-year-old striker to play in Monday's Round of 16 match against Belgium in Seattle.

The United States international received a red card during his team's 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina on July 1 after stepping on defender Tarik Muharemovic while contesting a loose ball. Balogun has scored three goals during the tournament as the United States pursues its first FIFA World Cup quarter-final appearance since 2002.

The controversy also reached the political arena. US President Donald Trump welcomed FIFA's decision on Truth Social, writing: "Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice!" Earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had criticized the dismissal, saying the American team had been "treated unfairly" and expressing regret that there was no effective appeal process.
