Türkiye’s National Defence Ministry has stated that next week’s NATO summit in Ankara will mark a “significant turning point” for the alliance, reaffirming collective defence and highlighting Türkiye’s strategic role. The ministry also condemned Israeli attacks in Syria and Lebanon.
Türkiye’s National Defence Ministry said on Thursday that the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara will mark a “significant turning point,” reaffirming the alliance’s unwavering commitment to collective defence and highlighting Ankara’s strategic role within NATO. Speaking at the ministry’s weekly press briefing, spokesperson Zeki Aktürk said the summit would serve as a key platform shaping NATO’s future strategic direction.
Summit agenda and defence industry
“The NATO summit to be held in our country will reaffirm the alliance’s unwavering commitment to collective defence, strengthen its adaptation to the evolving security environment and shared understanding of deterrence, and shape its future strategic orientation,” Aktürk said. He added that the Defence Industry Forum, to be held as part of the summit, is expected to contribute to increasing defence investments and enhancing transatlantic defence industry cooperation.
Israel and regional stability
Addressing recent developments in the Middle East, Aktürk said Israel remains the biggest obstacle to achieving lasting peace and stability. He called on the international community to adopt a more determined stance against Israel’s “expansionist, destabilising and provocative” policies. He also condemned Israel’s attacks in Syria and Lebanon, calling for an immediate halt and urging the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) to fulfil its duties. Regarding US‑Iran negotiations, he stressed the importance of responsible conduct for regional stability. The ministry also confirmed that Turkish search‑and‑rescue teams continue operations in earthquake‑stricken Venezuela.
