Putin slams deployment of US aircraft carriers in Mediterranean Sea

Russian president questions purpose of sending US military group to region at time of escalation of tensions in Middle East

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that the deployment of US aircraft carriers in the Mediterranean Sea has a negative impact on the situation in the Gaza Strip.

Speaking at the Russian Energy Week forum in Moscow, Putin questioned the purpose of sending a US military group to the region at a time of escalation.

"The US is deploying air carrier in the Mediterranean Sea, one, now announcing the second. I don't see the sense here. Are they going to bomb Lebanon or what? What are they going to do? Or did they just decide to scare someone? There are people there who are not afraid of anything," he stressed.

Problems cannot be solved this way, it is necessary to look for compromise solutions, he stressed.

"Of course, such actions, they escalate the situation. ... I hope that common sense will prevail," he said.
