Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez departed Ankara on Monday after his plane made an emergency landing in the Turkish capital due to a technical issue en route to Armenia. The Airbus A310 was diverted from Madrid to Yerevan, and Sanchez stayed overnight in Ankara under standard security procedures before resuming his journey.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez left Ankara on Monday after his official aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing in Türkiye’s capital due to a technical malfunction while flying to Armenia. The plane took off again once the issue was resolved, following an overnight stay required by standard security protocols. Spain’s official news agency EFE, citing government sources, reported that the Airbus A310 was traveling from Madrid to Yerevan, where Sanchez is scheduled to attend a European Political Community meeting beginning Monday. Authorities diverted the aircraft to Ankara, where the prime minister spent the night at a hotel before continuing his journey.
Previous disruptions
The incident is the latest in a series of travel disruptions involving the Spanish premier. Last September, Sanchez missed a meeting on Ukraine in Paris after a technical problem forced his Falcon aircraft to return to Madrid mid-flight; he later participated virtually. For Türkiye, hosting a foreign leader in an emergency situation underscores Ankara’s role as a reliable transit hub and its ability to provide swift assistance. Turkish airport and security personnel facilitated the overnight stay and departure.
