Türkiye's defense gains and global strategy examined at forum

Experts at the TRT World Forum in Istanbul have highlighted Türkiye's significant advancements in defense capabilities and its pursuit of strategic autonomy. The discussions emphasized the country's growing role in global security and its successful increase in domestic defense production.
Türkiye's expanding defense industry and its strategic positioning in a shifting global order were central topics at the TRT World Forum 2025 in Istanbul. Held under the theme "The Global Reset: From the Old Order to New Realities," the forum featured a dedicated session analyzing how the nation's defense transformation aligns with new international security paradigms.
Pursuit of Strategic Autonomy
Panelists, including SETA's Murat Yesiltas and former British ambassador Peter Westmacott, discussed Türkiye's drive for strategic autonomy. Yesiltas noted that while the EU has long sought greater defense independence, the war in Ukraine has intensified this debate across Europe. He highlighted Türkiye's aim to build a functional defense partnership with Europe, linking its enhanced strategic capacity directly to its foreign policy and counterterrorism objectives.
International Recognition of Defense Milestones
The forum saw international recognition of Türkiye's defense achievements. Peter Westmacott pointed to the nation's success in raising the domestic share of its defense production from 20% to 80% as a major milestone. He described the current global period as increasingly unpredictable and stressed the need for European nations to bolster their defense capabilities while supporting NATO.
A Broader Strategic Vision
Former diplomats also praised the comprehensive nature of Türkiye's strategy. Peter Millett observed that Turkish companies demonstrate a capacity for calculated risk-taking, supported by a broader strategic vision in Ankara that integrates technology, defense, politics, and economics. Carlo Marsili, former Italian ambassador, stated that Türkiye is redefining its NATO position by balancing alliance commitments with an independent foreign policy, all while playing a crucial role in Black Sea security.
