Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan (L) and Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry of Malaysia, Zafrul Aziz (R) chair the ASEAN Foreign and Economic Ministers' Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on October 25, 2025. Malaysia will host the 2025 ASEAN Summit which is scheduled to take place from October 26 to 28, 2025.

The ASEAN defense ministers' meeting has commenced in Kuala Lumpur, bringing together regional leaders and global powers including the US and China. Malaysian Defense Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin urged members to confront emerging non-traditional threats like cyberattacks and digital manipulation. The summit approved a record number of security initiatives for the regional bloc.

Defense leaders from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) convened in Kuala Lumpur on Friday for a major security summit, with top officials from global powers including the United States, China, and India also participating. The 19th ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting, chaired by Malaysian Defense Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin, aims to address the evolving security landscape facing the Southeast Asian region.

Shifting Security Priorities

Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin opened the proceedings by calling for a strategic pivot beyond conventional military cooperation. He emphasized that modern security challenges like cyber warfare, organized misinformation campaigns, and digital manipulation now demand equal attention to traditional territorial disputes. The minister stated that technological foresight and collaborative cybersecurity initiatives are essential for the bloc's future stability.

Record Initiative Approval

A significant outcome of the opening session was the formal approval of the largest number of joint initiatives ever endorsed in a single year by the ASEAN defense chiefs. This decision underscores a collective recognition of the urgent need to bolster regional security mechanisms. The approved measures are designed to enhance cooperation across multiple domains, from maritime security to digital defense.

Expanded Dialogue with Global Partners

The meetings will extend through Sunday and include the 12th ASEAN Defence Ministers-Plus gathering, which incorporates dialogue partners such as the US, China, Russia, Australia, India, Japan, South Korea, and New Zealand. The presence of these major global powers highlights the strategic importance of the ASEAN region and the interconnected nature of contemporary Indo-Pacific security issues. Several defense ministers from these partner nations have already arrived in the Malaysian capital for the talks.
