Belgian defense minister praises Türkiye's growing defense industry

Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken described Türkiye as a country with rapidly growing defense potential during a bilateral Defense Industry Day in Brussels. The event brought together major Turkish firms like ASELSAN and ROKETSAN with Belgian counterparts to explore cooperation, ahead of a royal economic mission to Türkiye in 2026.
Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken has publicly recognized Türkiye's expanding capabilities in the defense sector, calling it a nation with "a rapidly growing defense potential and a dynamic industry renowned worldwide." The remarks were made during the Türkiye-Belgium Defense Industry Day held in Brussels, an event designed to foster direct business engagement between defense companies from both nations.
Event Structure and High-Level Participation
The gathering, organized with the Turkish Embassy in Brussels, featured morning sessions on strategic visions and investment priorities, followed by dedicated one-on-one business meetings in the afternoon. Attendees included high-level officials such as Turkish Ambassador to Belgium Gorkem Baris Tantekin, Türkiye's Permanent Representative to NATO Ambassador Basat Ozturk, and Ertac Koca from Türkiye's Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB).
Emphasis on Strategic Partnership and Future Opportunities
Ambassador Tantekin highlighted that the cooperation serves the strategic objectives of both countries, reinforcing a "trust-based and constructive partnership rooted in historic friendship." Ertac Koca presented an overview of Türkiye's defense industry ecosystem and international collaboration prospects. The event served as a precursor to the Belgian Royal Economic Mission to Türkiye, scheduled for May 2026 and planned to be led by Princess Astrid.
Showcasing Turkish Defense Industry Leaders
Eight leading Turkish defense contractors, including industry giants ASELSAN, HAVELSAN, ROKETSAN, and TUSAS, participated under the auspices of the SSB. They engaged with over 100 Belgian participants from the private sector, research institutions, and government. This initiative underscores Türkiye's active efforts to position its domestically developed defense technologies within the NATO alliance and global markets, translating industrial growth into strategic diplomatic partnerships.
