China has expelled nine senior military officials, including General He Weidong, the vice chairman of the Central Military Commission, from the Communist Party over serious corruption allegations. The officials are accused of major duty-related crimes and have also been dismissed from the military, with their cases transferred for prosecution.

China's Defense Ministry announced a significant purge within the military's upper echelons on Friday, expelling nine senior officials from the Communist Party over grave corruption charges. The most prominent figure among them is General He Weidong, who served as the vice chairman of the powerful Central Military Commission and was a member of the Politburo.

The Charges and Official Response

A ministry statement accused the officials of "seriously violating Party discipline" and being "suspected of serious duty-related crimes." The statement described the nature of the offenses as "extremely serious" and involving an "extremely large amount of money." The Central Committee decided to expel the individuals from the Party and transfer their cases to military procuratorates for formal review and criminal prosecution.

A High-Level Crackdown

The group includes another high-ranking member of the Central Military Commission, Miao Hua. The others named are He Hongjun, Wang Xiubin, Lin Xiangyang, Qin Shutong, Yuan Huazhi, Wang Houbin, and Wang Chunning. Prior to their party expulsion, the Central Military Commission had already decided to dismiss all nine from their military posts.

A Signal of Anti-Corruption Resolve

The Defense Ministry framed the action as a demonstration of the Party's "unwavering resolve to persevere in the fight against corruption." It emphasized the leadership's commitment to leaving "no place for corrupt elements to hide in the military," underscoring a continued high-level drive to root out graft within the People's Liberation Army.
