China has officially praised the diplomatic efforts of Türkiye and Qatar, which were instrumental in brokering a ceasefire between neighboring nations Pakistan and Afghanistan. The agreement, finalized on Sunday in Doha, comes after a period of escalated border tensions and underscores a significant achievement in regional diplomacy.
Beijing Applauds Mediation Success
At a press briefing in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun expressed his government's position. "China welcomes the ceasefire between the two nations and commends the contributions of the relevant countries," he stated, directly referencing the mediation by Türkiye and Qatar. He emphasized that both Pakistan and Afghanistan are traditional, friendly neighbors of China.
A Path Forward for Regional Stability
The spokesman further elaborated on China's hopes for a durable peace, noting the importance of dialogue. Guo stated that China "hopes from the bottom of its heart" that the two countries settle their disputes through talks and work toward a lasting ceasefire for the benefit of regional stability. He also affirmed that China is prepared to play a constructive role in supporting this process.
Next Steps in the Peace Process
The initial ceasefire marks the beginning of a more detailed negotiation phase. The next round of substantive talks between Pakistani and Afghan officials is scheduled to take place in Istanbul on October 25th. This sets the stage for Türkiye to continue its pivotal role as a mediator and a key actor in fostering stability in the region.
