FBI says DC shooter had ties to US-backed Afghan military forces

FBI Director Kash Patel has revealed that the Afghan national suspected of shooting two National Guard members near the White House previously worked with US-backed military units in Afghanistan. The suspect, identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, also had prior associations with multiple US government agencies including the CIA during the Afghan conflict.
FBI Director Kash Patel disclosed Thursday that the Afghan national accused of shooting two National Guard members near the White House maintained previous connections with American-backed military forces in Afghanistan. The revelation adds complexity to the investigation of Wednesday's attack that left two guardsmen in critical condition.
Expanding Terrorism Investigation
Patel confirmed that "the subject had a relationship in Afghanistan with partner forces," indicating the suspect's background included collaboration with US-supported Afghan military units. The FBI director emphasized that authorities are thoroughly investigating this aspect of the suspect's history, including "any known associates that are either overseas or here in the United States of America." Patel characterized the ongoing probe as "an investigation of terrorism" while noting evidence collection and multiple search warrants executed nationwide, including at the suspect's last known Washington state residence.
Legal Charges and Victims' Condition
Federal prosecutor Jeanine Pirro announced the suspect faces multiple felony charges including three counts of assault with intent to kill while armed and firearms violations during a violent crime. The two wounded National Guard members from West Virginia, who had been sworn into their duties less than 24 hours before the attack, continue receiving "finest medical care" but remain in critical condition. Pirro stated that charges would be upgraded to murder if either victim succumbs to their injuries.
Suspect Background and Government Connections
Authorities identified the alleged attacker as 29-year-old Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal, who was taken into custody following Wednesday's shooting near the White House complex. Intelligence officials cited by Fox News indicated Lakanwal had previously worked with multiple US government agencies during the Afghanistan conflict, including the Central Intelligence Agency. The suspect's background with both US-backed Afghan military units and American intelligence services raises significant questions about security vetting procedures for foreign nationals who previously collaborated with US forces.
