Several killed including children in Montana shooting and house fire

Yellowstone County authorities confirmed on Monday that multiple adults and juveniles were killed when a gunman opened fire at a residence in Billings, Montana, before setting the structure ablaze and dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police described the Sunday evening incident in the West End neighborhood as a family disturbance, according to local media reports. Officers responded to reports of gunfire on White Star Circle after a 911 caller reported hearing shots on Sunday evening, arriving approximately 10 minutes later to find the house fully engulfed in flames within three minutes.

Investigation challenges

Interim Sheriff Kent O'Donnell stated that "multiple adults and multiple juveniles" died at the residence, though officials have not yet released the exact number, names, or ages of the victims. "Because of the fire and obviously water that goes to suppress that fire, it's going to slow our investigation of the crime scene recovery of evidence," he said, adding that authorities ask for patience as they complete the probe. Billings Fire Chief Matt Hoppel noted that firefighters faced limited water access and fewer hydrants than ideal, which presented significant challenges as fire conditions worsened.

Police Sgt. Jeff Stovall stated that some details were being withheld to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation, saying, "There are details we simply cannot release at this time." Hoppel added that "the delay in limited access presented significant challenges, fire conditions continued to worsen, and the residents ultimately became ... consumed by fire." The cause of the fire remains under investigation, O'Donnell said.

Victims identified

According to a GoFundMe fundraising page, at least eight people died in the incident, including two children named Landon and Charlotte. "On August 23, the unthinkable happened. Our community lost two of its brightest lights, Landon and Charlotte, along with six other family members, in a senseless act of violence," the page stated. The dead have been identified, but their number, names, and ages have not yet been officially released by authorities.
