FBI seizes 13 websites tied to alleged Chinese espionage

The FBI seized 13 internet domains allegedly used by suspected Chinese agents to target current and former US government employees with security clearances. The fake websites used AI-generated profile photos and offered payments for sensitive information. Authorities said the operation was linked to Chinese intelligence services and used cryptocurrency to conceal identities.
The FBI has seized 13 websites that the Justice Department said were operated by suspected Chinese intelligence agents to obtain classified and sensitive US government information. The fake domains targeted current and former US government employees who held security clearances, using stolen or fabricated identities and AI-generated profile photos to appear credible. The websites advertised vague “consulting” positions and offered payments in exchange for work-related reports and sensitive information.
Methods of operation
According to the Justice Department, applicants were offered compensation for providing information. The operation’s organizers concealed their identities through cryptocurrency transactions and online payment platforms. “These domain seizures offer a glimpse at how foreign actors can use promises of easy money to lure Americans into revealing sensitive or classified information that they are duty-bound to protect,” said Assistant Attorney General for National Security John A. Eisenberg. He warned anyone approached online with offers of easy income for vague “consulting” work to exercise extreme caution.
