A new representative survey reveals a significant majority of Germans oppose their government's military aid to Israel, with 82% against it. The poll also indicates a profound change in how Germans perceive their historical responsibility towards Israel, adding pressure on Berlin's foreign policy.

A comprehensive new poll indicates a deep and growing divide between the German public and their government's policy of military support for Israel. The survey, released this Tuesday, found that an overwhelming 82% of Germans are against providing military aid to Israel, highlighting a stark contrast with official state policy.

A Call for Diplomatic Pressure

The data, collected by the Forsa institute for the Korber Stiftung, shows that nearly three-quarters (73%) of the population believes the German government should apply stronger diplomatic pressure on Israel. This public sentiment emerges amidst a ongoing conflict and signals a significant challenge to Berlin's longstanding stance in the Middle East.

Reevaluating Historical Responsibility

Perhaps the most striking finding is a shift in the foundational principle of Germany's foreign policy. For the first time, a majority of 60% now rejects the idea that Germany bears a special, historic responsibility for Israel's security due to the Holocaust. This marks a potential watershed moment, as only 38% still support this traditional cornerstone of German-Israeli relations.

Policy in Flux Amid Public Sentiment

The German government, one of Israel's largest arms suppliers in recent years with authorized exports exceeding €492 million since late 2023, has felt this public pressure. Chancellor Friedrich Merz's administration had previously imposed restrictions on arms exports, though these were recently lifted citing a sustained ceasefire. This policy fluctuation occurs against a backdrop of repeated polls showing a widening gap between official government action and the will of the German people.
