Israel launches major military operation across northern West Bank

Israeli forces have launched an extensive military operation across the northern West Bank, deploying significant reinforcements and combat helicopters to the Tubas governorate. The operation, which began overnight, involves coordinated actions by the Israeli army, Shin Bet security agency, and police forces, with military bulldozers creating earthen barriers to seal all entrances to the area.

Unprecedented Military Tactics and Civilian Impact

Tubas Governor Ahmad Al-Asaad described the operation as unprecedented in recent years, noting that “This is the first time in years that Apache helicopters were involved in such an operation, firing heavy machine-gun rounds toward residential areas.” The military has imposed a strict curfew and established multiple checkpoints while restricting the movement of ambulances and medical teams, significantly hampering emergency response capabilities throughout the affected region.

Home Raids and Emergency Response

Israeli troops have conducted raids on numerous residences in Tubas, Tammun, al-Far'a, and Tayasi, converting many homes into temporary military outposts. Local authorities have established an emergency committee to address humanitarian needs and coordinate essential services, with schools and workplaces suspending operations due to security concerns. Governor Al-Asaad confirmed that Israeli officials informed Palestinian authorities the operation would continue for several days, which he characterized as a “dangerous escalation.”

Context of Escalating West Bank Violence

The military action occurs amid heightened tensions in the West Bank since the Gaza conflict began in October 2023. According to Palestinian health authorities, at least 1,082 Palestinians have been killed and approximately 11,000 injured by Israeli military and settler attacks in the occupied territory during this period, with over 20,000 arrests documented. The operation follows last July's International Court of Justice opinion declaring Israel's occupation of Palestinian territory illegal and calling for settlement evacuations.
