Iran says Pakistan army chief’s visit brought diplomatic breakthrough

Iranian presidential communications official Seyed Mehdi Tabatabaei said Tuesday that Pakistan’s army chief secured "significant diplomatic achievements" during high-level talks in Tehran, dismissing media speculation that the visit had produced no tangible results.

Field Marshal Asim Munir held meetings on Monday with President Masoud Pezeshkian, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, Supreme National Security Council member Mohsen Rezaei, and Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni. Pakistani Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi accompanied the delegation, with talks focusing on preventing further escalation, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and reaching a negotiated settlement to end the war with Washington.

Tabatabaei took to the social media platform X on Tuesday to dismiss reports of a failed mission, stating: "Contrary to some inaccurate media speculation, the visit of Field Marshal Asim Munir, the army chief of friendly Pakistan, to Iran was highly productive and yielded significant diplomatic achievements, the results of which will become apparent soon." The discussions addressed steps to restore the Islamabad memorandum of understanding and move toward a comprehensive settlement, with Naqvi noting that "significant progress" had been achieved during the visit.

Iran and the US signed the 14-point Islamabad memorandum in June to end the war, but the interim deal quickly faltered amid continued hostilities. The conflict began on February 28 and has killed more than 3,300 people in Iran, with Islamabad now positioning itself as a key mediator between the adversaries.
