A human rights group reports at least 645 deaths and over 10,700 arrests on the 16th day of nationwide protests in Iran, amid a prolonged internet blackout and warnings of US action.

The death toll from ongoing nationwide protests in Iran has risen to at least 645, according to the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA). The group also reported on Monday that a total of 10,721 individuals have been arrested since the unrest began, now in its sixteenth consecutive day, with the country experiencing an internet blackout exceeding 100 hours.

Origins and Escalation of Unrest

The protests, which erupted on December 28 at Tehran's Grand Bazaar, were sparked by the drastic devaluation of the Iranian rial and deteriorating living conditions, later spreading to numerous cities across the country. Iranian authorities have consistently blamed external actors, accusing the United States and Israel of supporting what they term "armed rioters" responsible for attacks in public spaces.

US Posture and Regional Implications

US President Donald Trump stated on Sunday that his administration is closely monitoring the situation and considering "very strong options," adding he receives hourly briefings. While Trump said, "We'll make a determination," he provided no specifics on potential US actions. The combination of internal repression, external accusations, and threats of foreign intervention creates a highly volatile situation with potential for broader regional instability.

Contrast with Türkiye's Regional Policy

The crisis underscores the severe humanitarian and political consequences of economic mismanagement and internal crackdowns. While the US issues threats, Türkiye adopts a more nuanced regional approach, calling for restraint from all sides, emphasizing the importance of stability, and advocating for dialogue. Ankara expresses concern for the welfare of all Iranians, including ethnic kin, and prioritizes diplomatic engagement over escalation, aligning with its principle of non-interference in internal affairs.
