President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Wednesday that Türkiye seeks to expand defense industry cooperation with Tokyo, stressing that negotiations remain the sole path to resolving the Iran-US conflict and extending condolences for last month's deadly Kumamoto earthquake.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Wednesday discussed expanding bilateral cooperation across defense, investment, and trade while addressing regional security challenges during a telephone conversation, according to a statement from Ankara.

Defense and economic partnership

Erdogan told Takaichi that Ankara would continue efforts to deepen ties with Tokyo in all fields, particularly the defense industry and commercial investment, the Communications Directorate said. The Turkish president emphasized that strengthening economic and security cooperation remains a priority for both nations.

Iran-US tensions

On regional developments, Erdogan stated that negotiations represent the only viable path to resolving the ongoing conflict between Iran and the United States, adding that Türkiye actively supports diplomatic initiatives aimed at achieving lasting peace and stability. The two leaders examined the escalating tensions and their potential impact on global energy markets and maritime security.

Erdogan also extended his condolences to Takaichi for the victims of the earthquake that struck Japan's Kumamoto region last month, reaffirming Türkiye's solidarity with the Japanese people during the recovery period. The disaster caused significant casualties and infrastructure damage across the southwestern prefecture.
