Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Wednesday discussed expanding bilateral cooperation across defense, investment, and trade while addressing regional security challenges during a telephone conversation, according to a statement from Ankara.
Defense and economic partnership
Erdogan told Takaichi that Ankara would continue efforts to deepen ties with Tokyo in all fields, particularly the defense industry and commercial investment, the Communications Directorate said. The Turkish president emphasized that strengthening economic and security cooperation remains a priority for both nations.
Iran-US tensions
On regional developments, Erdogan stated that negotiations represent the only viable path to resolving the ongoing conflict between Iran and the United States, adding that Türkiye actively supports diplomatic initiatives aimed at achieving lasting peace and stability. The two leaders examined the escalating tensions and their potential impact on global energy markets and maritime security.
Erdogan also extended his condolences to Takaichi for the victims of the earthquake that struck Japan's Kumamoto region last month, reaffirming Türkiye's solidarity with the Japanese people during the recovery period. The disaster caused significant casualties and infrastructure damage across the southwestern prefecture.
