Macron expresses solidarity with Denmark, Greenland amid renewed US interest

French President Emmanuel Macron reaffirmed support for Denmark's sovereignty over Greenland, asserting the island "belongs to its people," following a U.S. announcement of a special envoy to the territory.
French President Emmanuel Macron has publicly affirmed France’s support for the sovereignty of Denmark and the territorial integrity of Greenland. In a statement on social media, Macron referenced his visit to Nuuk last June, stating Greenland "belongs to its people," with Denmark as its guarantor, and aligning France with European solidarity on the issue.
Statement Follows US Appointment of Special Envoy
Macron's remarks follow an announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump appointing Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as a special envoy to Greenland. Trump cited the island's strategic importance for U.S. national security. Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark and has been the subject of past U.S. interest due to its location and resources, including a prior comment from Trump describing its acquisition as an economic necessity.
Rejection of Sovereignty Challenges
Both Danish and Greenlandic authorities have consistently rejected any proposals challenging or transferring sovereignty. Macron's statement reinforces a European commitment to international law and the current political status of the territory amid renewed external attention.
