Pakistan hails Erdogan's 'highly supportive' role in US-Iran deal

Shehbaz Sharif told parliament on Monday that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan played a "highly supportive" role in Islamabad's months-long mediation efforts to end the war between Washington and Tehran, as both sides confirmed a permanent ceasefire agreement and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday thanked Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for his "highly" supportive role in mediating a peace agreement between the United States and Iran, telling the National Assembly in Islamabad that Ankara's assistance proved crucial to ending months of hostilities. "I especially thank my dear brother, President of Türkiye Recep Tayyip Erdogan, for his highly supportive role and his support to our efforts...," Sharif said while addressing lawmakers.
Regional and domestic support
The premier also extended appreciation to Chinese President Xi Jinping, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani for their "continued" support of Islamabad's diplomatic initiative. He additionally lauded the efforts of Pakistani army chief Field Marshall Asim Munir, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, crediting the military and diplomatic teams with securing the landmark settlement.
Deal terms and US confirmation
US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that Washington had finalized an agreement with Tehran, authorizing the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the removal of the US naval blockade. Sharif confirmed early Monday that both capitals had declared an immediate and permanent cessation of military operations across all fronts, including in Lebanon.
Both Washington and Tehran later verified the announcement through official channels. Pakistan has served as the primary mediator between the two sides since brokering a ceasefire on April 8, weeks after the United States and Israel launched military strikes against Iran on February 28.
