Russia pledges to develop Syrian oil fields in expanded cooperation

Russia has committed to participating in the development of Syria's oil and gas fields as part of a broader initiative to deepen energy and reconstruction cooperation with Damascus. The announcement was made by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak following a meeting between President Vladimir Putin and Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa in Moscow, signaling a significant step in strengthening the strategic partnership between the two nations.

Expanding Energy Sector Involvement
Novak stated that Russian companies are prepared to engage with both existing and new Syrian oil fields, including those that are currently underdeveloped or have been mothballed. "Russian companies have been working in Syria for a long time, in oil fields: there are fields that require development, there are those that have been mothballed, and there are new fields. We are also ready to participate," Novak told reporters, as cited by the state-run Tass news agency.
Focus on Infrastructure and Humanitarian Aid
The discussions between the two leaders also centered on restoring Syria's critical infrastructure, which has been heavily damaged by years of conflict. Novak highlighted that Russia can provide support in rebuilding the country's energy, rail, and transport systems. Additionally, humanitarian supplies were addressed, with the Syrian side expressing interest in receiving essential goods such as wheat, food, and medicine, which Novak confirmed would be prioritized.
Future Cooperation Framework
To advance these plans, both sides agreed to convene a meeting of an intergovernmental commission in the near future. This body will focus on enhancing trade, economic, and investment cooperation across multiple sectors, including energy, transport, healthcare, tourism, and culture. Novak emphasized that Russian firms plan to utilize domestic equipment in Syria's reconstruction efforts, underscoring a comprehensive approach to bilateral collaboration.
