Sudan's warring factions agree in principle to US-backed truce

A US-brokered initiative for a humanitarian ceasefire in Sudan has gained initial approval from both the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The agreement, still under negotiation, aims to establish a three-month truce to allow aid delivery and pave the way for a civilian-led transition.
A potential breakthrough has emerged in the Sudanese conflict as warring parties have agreed in principle to a US-mediated humanitarian truce plan. Massad Boulos, the US Senior Adviser for Arab and African Affairs, confirmed that both the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have accepted the initial framework. The development marks a significant step in international efforts to end a war that has devastated the Northeast African nation since April 2023.
The Path to a Ceasefire
The current initiative, operating within a framework established by the International Quad in Washington, aims to secure a complete cessation of hostilities. Boulos stated, "Both parties have agreed in principle, and we have not recorded any initial objection from either side. We are now focusing on the fine details." While no direct negotiations are currently underway, a US-led communication channel is facilitating the process. The proposed truce would last for three months, enabling emergency aid delivery across Sudan.
The Humanitarian Crisis and International Framework
The urgent need for a truce is underscored by the catastrophic humanitarian situation, particularly in El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur. Boulos described conditions there as "very urgent and painful" and condemned atrocities targeting civilians. The International Quad—comprising the US, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the UAE—had previously called for this truce as a stepping stone toward a permanent ceasefire and a subsequent nine-month transition to a civilian-led government.
Broader Implications and Ongoing Conflict
The agreement in principle offers a glimmer of hope in a conflict that has killed thousands and displaced millions. Boulos emphasized that the primary US concerns are addressing the immediate humanitarian catastrophe, achieving lasting peace, and preserving Sudan's unity. The conflict between the army and the RSF has persisted for over a year, defying numerous regional and international mediation attempts. The success of this US-led effort now hinges on translating the initial agreement into a detailed and actionable plan on the ground.
