Trump plane returns to US after electrical fault on Davos flight

President Donald Trump’s aircraft turned back to the United States shortly after departure due to a reported electrical problem, forcing a last-minute change of plans on his way to the World Economic Forum in Davos. The White House said the issue was minor and precautionary, with Trump expected to continue his trip on a different plane as global leaders, including from Türkiye, gather in Switzerland.
President Donald Trump’s official aircraft returned to Joint Base Andrews on Tuesday night after the crew detected what the White House described as a minor electrical malfunction shortly after takeoff. The plane had been en route to Davos, Switzerland, where Trump is scheduled to attend the World Economic Forum, a major international meeting that also features strong participation from Türkiye and other key economies.
White House confirms precautionary decision
In a statement shared on X by the White House’s Rapid Response account, officials said the aircraft’s crew identified the issue soon after departure and decided to return as a safety measure. “Out of an abundance of caution, AF1 is returning to Joint Base Andrews,” the statement said, adding that the president and his team would transfer to another aircraft to continue the journey to Switzerland.
Davos agenda remains unchanged
The White House stressed that the disruption would not affect Trump’s plans to attend the World Economic Forum, where global leaders, business figures and policymakers are meeting to discuss the world economy, security challenges and geopolitical risks. Türkiye’s presence at Davos is expected to focus on regional stability, economic cooperation and diplomatic engagement.

Trump comments before departure
Speaking briefly to reporters before boarding, Trump described the visit as unpredictable but important. “This will be an interesting trip. I have no idea what’s gonna happen, but you are well represented,” he said. The forum in Davos has long served as a platform for high-level dialogue, including discussions involving Türkiye, the United States and European partners.
