Trump signals possible Iran talks, claims control of Hormuz

US President Donald Trump has indicated that negotiations with Iran could resume "maybe at some point," while asserting that Washington has "complete control" of the Strait of Hormuz. Trump reiterated that Iran must not acquire nuclear weapons and warned of "very draconian sanctions" if Tehran does not comply.

US President Donald Trump has suggested that negotiations with Iran could potentially resume, while reiterating his assertion that the United States maintains full control over the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump described the current situation regarding Iran as "so good" and left open the possibility of returning to the negotiating table. The remarks come amid ongoing tensions following the collapse of a June memorandum of understanding between the two nations, which had been intended to end hostilities and pave the way for a broader agreement.

Nuclear weapons and sanctions threats

Addressing concerns over Iran's nuclear ambitions, Trump declared that Tehran must completely eliminate any nuclear weapons capability. "They have to get rid of completely. They have to get rid of no nuclear weapon. Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon. You know why? Because they'd use it, and we're not going to let them use it. So Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon, and they won't," he stated. The president also warned of potential "very draconian sanctions" on Iran, while maintaining that the Strait of Hormuz remains open for maritime traffic. "That may slow down a little bit at some point. But right now, a lot of boats are coming through. The naval blockade has been extremely effective," he added.

US control of Strait and alternative energy sources

Trump emphasized that the US has "complete control" of the Strait of Hormuz, dismissing Iranian drone activity as mere "nuisance value." He noted that the waterway remains open, with substantial shipping activity continuing. However, Trump also pointed to shifting energy dynamics, suggesting that the strategic importance of the Strait may decline as alternative sources emerge. "Texas, Alaska, Louisiana, and other places" have become new oil sources, he said, adding that "record numbers of pipelines are being built." Trump concluded that "the Hormuz Strait is not going to be quite as important as it was in the past."
