Turkic states organization chief emphasizes diaspora role as 'natural bridges'

Secretary-General Kubanychbek Omuraliev highlighted the strategic importance of diaspora communities for cultural and economic cooperation during a Washington reception. He announced plans to expand training programs, potentially in the US next year.
The head of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) has emphasized the critical role of diaspora communities as "natural bridges" for fostering unity and cooperation across the Turkic world. Secretary-General Kubanychbek Omuraliev delivered this message at a diplomatic reception in Washington, D.C., marking the Day of Solidarity of Azerbaijanis Worldwide.
Strategic focus on diaspora coordination and capacity building
Speaking at the event hosted by the Azerbaijani Embassy, Omuraliev stated that the OTS attaches "special importance to cooperation with diaspora communities." He outlined concrete steps the organization is taking, including establishing a platform for national diaspora agencies and launching a Diaspora Capacity-Building Training Program. Omuraliev revealed that the next session of this training program could be held in the United States next year, signaling an intent to strengthen ties with Turkic communities in North America through dialogue and joint initiatives focused on cultural heritage and people-to-people contacts.
Azerbaijan's leadership and a call for broader solidarity
The Secretary-General praised Azerbaijan, which currently holds the chairpersonship of the OTS, for its key role in advancing solidarity and practical cooperation. Azerbaijani Ambassador to the US Khazar Ibrahim expanded on the theme of unity, stating the solidarity day is "not only for Azerbaijanis but for all the Turks." He expressed hope for greater participation from diasporas of other brotherly nations in future commemorations, reflecting a vision of pan-Turkic solidarity that extends beyond national borders.
The OTS as a growing geopolitical platform
The Washington event is part of Omuraliev's visit to the US capital, where he also met with ambassadors from OTS member and observer states. The OTS, with members including Türkiye, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan, serves as a crucial international platform for these nations to enhance political, economic, and cultural ties. Observer states include Hungary, Turkmenistan, and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). This focus on mobilizing diaspora potential aligns with the organization's broader goals of enhancing connectivity and shared prosperity across Eurasia, a vision championed by Türkiye as a founding and leading member.
