Ukraine seeks 25 Patriot systems from US, says Zelenskyy

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that Kyiv is preparing a contract with the United States for the supply of 25 Patriot air defense systems. He acknowledged the delivery would be a long-term process due to existing production queues but expressed hope for political solutions to expedite it. Zelenskyy also reaffirmed that Ukraine's position on not withdrawing from the Donbas region remains unchanged.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Monday that negotiations are underway with the United States to formalize an agreement for the delivery of 25 Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine. The announcement, reported by Ukrainian state media, highlights Kyiv's continued push to bolster its air defenses amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.
A Long-Term Defense Procurement
Zelenskyy described the potential deal as a "very good story -- not easy, but long-term," noting the request originated from Ukraine's Air Force. He explained that a queue for the production of these advanced systems already exists, involving other nations with prior contracts. Consequently, Ukraine would receive the Patriots in varying numbers annually, rather than in a single delivery.
The Role of Political Will
The Ukrainian leader indicated that political intervention could alter the delivery schedule. "The White House can change the queue if there is political will," Zelenskyy remarked. He added that his government is actively working to secure priority within the production line, suggesting there is positivity regarding which European partners might support such a move to accelerate the process.
Stance on Donbas and Diplomacy
Reiterating a core tenet of Ukraine's war stance, Zelenskyy confirmed that Kyiv's position on not ceding the Donbas region remains firm. He linked this to recent diplomacy, suggesting that Russian President Vladimir Putin's recent contact with former US President Donald Trump might have been influenced by discussions on potential long-range weapon deliveries to Ukraine. Zelenskyy has consistently denied any scenario involving a withdrawal from the eastern region, warning it would create a strategic bridgehead for Russia.
