US Treasury secretary says Washington entering 'economic D-Day' against Iran
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has declared that Washington is launching an "economic D-Day" against Iran, vowing to sever every financial lifeline sustaining the regime. He asserted that President Trump has already dismantled Iran's military and nuclear capabilities, and now the administration will deploy unprecedented economic pressure.

The United States is preparing to unleash what Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has described as the "single greatest financial offensive ever marshaled against an adversary" as Washington intensifies its campaign against Tehran. In a social media post on Sunday, Bessent declared that the Trump administration is entering the "endgame" of its confrontation with Iran, following what he characterised as the successful dismantling of the Islamic Republic's military infrastructure and nuclear ambitions.

Unprecedented economic pressure

"President Trump has dismantled Iran's military capabilities, destroyed nearly 100 percent of its military factories, and buried its nuclear program," Bessent stated on X. "We are now entering the endgame. At dawn begins an economic D-Day." The Treasury chief pledged that the administration would harness "every agency, every authority" to sever all economic lifelines sustaining the Iranian regime, leaving Tehran diplomatically and financially isolated.

Warnings to allies and adversaries

Bessent also issued a stark warning to governments and other actors who might challenge Washington's Iran policy, cautioning that the era of negotiating with American enforcement efforts had ended. "The Islamic Republic has subsisted by dressing extortion as security guarantees... Under President Trump, that era is over," he said. He added: "Those who fear the danger of defying Tehran ought not to discount the cost of testing Washington." The Treasury secretary did not provide specific details on which agencies or measures would be deployed in the offensive.
