Japan's Naomi Osaka has made history as the first person from Asia to lead the world tennis rankings, while Serbia’s Novak Djokovic kept the top spot in the men's rankings.

The latest world rankings were revealed Monday after the end of the 2019 Australian Open tournament on Sunday.

Djokovic won his seventh 2019 Australian Open title in men's singles by defeating his Spanish rival Rafael Nadal 3-0 on Sunday.

With the Australia Open victory, Djokovic also won his 15th grand slam title and remained world number one in the ATP rankings.

Runner-up Spanish Rafael Nadal stayed at world No. 2. Swiss Roger Federer drooped to No. 6 from No. 3 after being eliminated in the fourth round of the 2019 Australian Open.

Osaka rises to women’s No. 1

Japan's Osaka won the women’s crown in the 2019 Australian Open on Saturday by beating Czech Petra Kvitova 2-1 in the women's single final.

The victory pushed Osaka over the top to replace Romania's Simona Halep as world number one, and making her the first person from Asia to lead the tennis rankings.

Runner-up Petra Kvitova moved up from No. 6 to No. 2.
