President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke by telephone on Sunday with Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus President Tufan Erhurman and Prime Minister Unal Ustel to convey his condolences following the fatal capsizing of a passenger vessel off the coast of Kyrenia, the Turkish Presidency said.

During the separate calls with the TRNC leaders, Erdogan expressed his sorrow over the loss of life and extended his sympathies to the families of the victims, according to a statement from the Presidential Communications Directorate. The Turkish leader reaffirmed Ankara's commitment to standing by the Turkish Cypriot people during this difficult time.

Ankara's Assistance

Erdogan stated that Türkiye is providing full support for the ongoing search and rescue efforts, noting that relevant Turkish agencies are coordinating closely with TRNC authorities to manage the aftermath of the tragedy. The president added that all necessary technical and logistical assistance will be made available to ensure the effective continuation of recovery operations in the maritime zone.

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus — recognized only by Ankara — relies heavily on Türkiye for defense, economic aid, and emergency response capabilities in the Eastern Mediterranean region. Sunday's calls underscored the institutional bond between the two capitals, which routinely coordinate on cross-border crises and security matters affecting the island.
