Fidan, Araghchi discuss US-Iran agreement in phone call

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi discussed the recently announced US-Iran peace agreement. Araghchi thanked Türkiye for its contributions to the negotiation process. Fidan expressed satisfaction with the deal and stressed the need to remain vigilant against provocations. The signing ceremony will be held in Switzerland on Friday.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held a phone conversation with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, on Monday to discuss the agreement reached between the United States and Iran, diplomatic sources said. Araghchi thanked Türkiye for its contributions to the negotiation process between Tehran and Washington. Fidan expressed satisfaction with the agreement and voiced hope that follow-up talks would also yield positive outcomes. He stressed the need to remain vigilant against provocations aimed at undermining the agreement, adding that Türkiye would continue its efforts to strengthen peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.
Agreement announcement
The phone call followed Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s announcement early Monday that the United States and Iran had reached a peace agreement, with a signing ceremony scheduled for Friday in Switzerland. Both Washington and Tehran later confirmed the announcement. US President Trump said the agreement had been finalized and announced plans to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and lift the US naval blockade, which has been in place since April 13. The closure of the strait had disrupted global oil supplies and raised energy prices.
Türkiye’s role
Türkiye has been involved in the diplomatic process, though Pakistan led the mediation. Ankara has maintained communication channels with both Tehran and Washington and has offered to host talks. Turkish officials have also called for the reopening of the strait and the protection of freedom of navigation. The agreement represents a significant diplomatic victory for multiple mediators, including Pakistan, Qatar, and Türkiye. Fidan’s warning about provocations suggests that Turkey is aware of potential spoilers who may attempt to derail the deal.
