Iranian Foreign Minister stresses need for close Türkiye–Iran coordination on regional challenges

During a visit to Istanbul, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasized that close consultation between Türkiye and Iran is essential to address regional issues and criticized the European Union’s decision to designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi highlighted on Friday the importance of close coordination and regular consultations between Türkiye and Iran to effectively respond to regional challenges. Speaking to Iranian state television during an official visit to Istanbul, Araghchi noted that the trip—planned months in advance—follows Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan’s earlier visit and aims to discuss bilateral, regional, and international issues.
Strengthening Bilateral and Regional Dialogue
Araghchi stated, “Iran and Türkiye are major neighboring countries that have always maintained close consultations. We share strong ties in political, economic, social, and cultural fields, and regularly consult on regional matters.” He added that evolving regional objectives pursued by the United States and other actors make it necessary for Tehran and Ankara to align positions, review developments, and exchange views on managing current challenges.
Criticism of EU’s IRGC Designation
The Iranian minister also addressed the European Union’s recent move to designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization, calling it a “major strategic mistake.” Araghchi argued that “Europe is a continent in decline and is increasingly losing its role on the international stage, a process that unfortunately is accelerating.” He suggested Europe would eventually recognize the error, much as it did with past decisions such as the “snapback” mechanism related to the Iran nuclear deal.
High-Level Meetings in Türkiye
During his stay, Araghchi is scheduled to hold talks with Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, underscoring the diplomatic significance of the visit.
