The UAE Defense Ministry said on Monday its Air Force responded to a drone detected over the country's territorial waters while approaching from Iran, hours after Tehran claimed to have launched dozens of explosive drones at American troops stationed at Al Minhad Air Base in the Emirates.

The United Arab Emirates' Defense Ministry announced on Monday that its Air Force responded to an unmanned aerial vehicle detected over the country's territorial waters while approaching from Iran, heightening security alerts across the Gulf amid intensifying exchanges between Washington and Tehran. The ministry stated that the UAE Armed Forces remain on high readiness to address potential threats, adding that air defense systems tracked the drone as it approached from Iranian airspace.

The statement came just hours after Iran's military said it had launched dozens of explosive drones at US troops and helicopters stationed at Al Minhad Air Base in the Emirates, describing the operation as direct retaliation for American strikes on Iranian soil. Iran's Revolutionary Guard indicated the early Monday attack specifically targeted US assets to avenge the previous day's operation against its coastal defenses.

Larak Island operation

On Sunday, US forces struck two Iranian launchers on Larak Island, marking the first American attacks on Iranian territory since late July and targeting systems allegedly being prepared to fire sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said several fighters and civilians were killed or injured in the strike and vowed further response against US interests in the region.

The drone interception over UAE waters occurred against a backdrop of intensifying American-Iranian hostilities that have disrupted commercial shipping lanes and threatened maritime security in the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Washington and Tehran have traded blows across the Gulf region for months, endangering commercial traffic through the vital waterway that carries one-fifth of global oil shipments.
