Türkiye dismisses Greece's Aegean energy plan as legally void

Ankara has rejected Greece's new renewable energy framework for the Aegean Sea, stating it carries no legal weight regarding Türkiye's position on bilateral disputes. The Foreign Ministry urged Athens to avoid unilateral actions, emphasizing that cooperation under international law remains the only viable path forward.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry has firmly responded to Greece's recently announced spatial framework for renewable energy development in the Aegean Sea, asserting that the initiative holds no legal consequences for Türkiye's longstanding position on interconnected bilateral disputes. Ministry spokesperson Öncü Keçeli stated that the framework, like previous Greek attempts, carries no binding effect on Türkiye, particularly concerning geographical formations whose sovereignty was not transferred to Greece under international treaties. Ankara maintains that unilateral actions cannot alter the legal realities governing the Aegean's complex maritime geography.

Unilateral actions undermine regional cooperation

"As we have emphasized on various occasions in the past, this and similar initiatives will not affect Türkiye's legal position regarding Aegean issues," Keçeli declared in a statement posted on the social media platform X. He stressed that enclosed and semi-enclosed seas such as the Aegean and Mediterranean require collaborative approaches among coastal states, as encouraged by international maritime law. The spokesperson called on Athens to avoid measures that could heighten tensions, urging instead a return to constructive dialogue aimed at resolving outstanding differences through mutual understanding and legal frameworks.

Türkiye reaffirms commitment to good-neighborly relations

Keçeli reiterated that Türkiye, as one of the two littoral states bordering the Aegean, remains fully prepared to engage in cooperation with Greece. He referenced the Athens Declaration on "Good Neighborly Relations," signed on December 7, 2023, as the appropriate foundation for addressing disputes. Ankara continues to advocate for a comprehensive approach grounded in international law, equity, and the principles of neighborliness to resolve Aegean issues. Türkiye's position reflects a consistent policy of seeking peaceful resolutions while firmly rejecting any unilateral measures that disregard its legitimate rights and interests in the region.

Strategic implications for regional energy and stability

The dispute over renewable energy planning in the Aegean underscores broader regional tensions concerning maritime jurisdiction, energy exploration, and territorial sovereignty. Türkiye has repeatedly called for inclusive mechanisms to manage overlapping claims, emphasizing that sustainable development in the Aegean requires joint planning and shared responsibility. As Greece proceeds with its energy framework, Ankara's response signals that it will continue to defend its legal positions while remaining open to dialogue. The situation highlights the delicate balance between national interests and regional stability in one of the Mediterranean's most strategically significant waterways.
