Türkiye's National Defense Ministry said Turkish fighter jets and support aircraft joined a NATO integrated air and missile defense activity in Romanian airspace, conducting the alliance's first low-speed interception training exercise of its kind.
NATO drills in Romania
Türkiye's National Defense Ministry announced on Sunday that Turkish Air Force assets participated in a NATO Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) activity conducted in Romanian airspace on Aug. 13. The deployment marked another phase of Ankara's contributions to alliance defensive operations in the Black Sea region, according to the statement posted on NSosyal.
Military assets deployed
The activity featured two F-16 fighter jets accompanied by an E-7T airborne early warning and control aircraft and a KC-135R aerial refueling tanker. These platforms conducted coordinated operations with NATO forces during the drills, with the E-7T providing surveillance capabilities and the KC-135R extending operational range for fighter missions.
Training milestone
For the first time within this NATO framework, Turkish and allied forces successfully executed a low-speed interception training exercise. The ministry confirmed this tactical achievement was conducted jointly with NATO assets, demonstrating enhanced interoperability between allied air forces in detecting and neutralizing aerial threats.
Alliance commitments
The ministry emphasized that Türkiye continues to contribute substantially to NATO's integrated air and missile defense architecture. Romanian airspace serves as a strategic location for collective security measures along the alliance's eastern flank, where Ankara maintains active participation in defensive operations, according to the statement.
