Türkiye’s homegrown E5000 locomotive gets EU certification

Türkiye has achieved a significant breakthrough in rail manufacturing as its first indigenous electric locomotive, the E5000, received official EU interoperability certification. Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that the Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI) certificate confirms the locomotive meets all European standards, paving the way for international sales. "We now have the opportunity to sell it both to the EU and worldwide," Uraloğlu stated during a ceremony in Ankara.

Rigorous testing and production

The locomotive, manufactured at TÜRASAŞ’s facility in Eskişehir, underwent comprehensive testing at the plant and in field conditions to verify its performance and safety. The certification process validated not only the E5000’s technical specifications but also Türkiye’s capability to produce rolling stock that competes on a global stage. Serial production is already in motion, with 30 of the planned 95 next-generation electric locomotives completed to date.

Strategic export potential

The EU certification represents more than a technical achievement—it positions Türkiye as a serious player in the international rail equipment market. With European and global operators seeking modern, efficient electric locomotives, the E5000 offers a competitive alternative backed by Türkiye’s growing engineering expertise. The project underscores Ankara’s broader push for self-reliance in strategic industries, reducing import dependency while creating new export revenue streams. As production continues, the E5000 is set to become a flagship of Turkish rail technology both at home and abroad.
