67% of Belgians oppose using frozen Russian assets for Ukraine loan

A new survey indicates 67% of Belgians oppose an EU plan to use frozen Russian sovereign assets to finance a loan for Ukraine, primarily due to concerns over systemic risks to Belgium. Only 22% of respondents support the controversial proposal.
A significant majority of Belgians are against a European Union proposal to utilize frozen Russian state assets to fund a loan for Ukraine, according to a new poll. The survey, conducted jointly by RTL Info, IPSOS, and Le Soir and published on Monday, found that 67% of respondents believe the Belgian government should not agree to release the immobilized funds.
Concerns Over Financial and Legal Risk
The primary driver of public opposition is concern over potential systemic risks to Belgium's financial sector. A large portion of the contested Russian assets, estimated at billions of euros, are held at the Euroclear settlement house in Brussels. This has prompted legal reservations from Belgium and several other EU member states. The poll showed only 22% of Belgians support the asset plan, with 11% expressing no interest in the issue. The public stance aligns with the position of Prime Minister Bart De Wever, who has voiced caution.
EU Moves and Russian Reaction
The poll results emerge as EU leaders prepare for a summit in Brussels this week to decide on the allocation of funds from these assets to Ukraine. Last Friday, the bloc took a formal step to "indefinitely immobilize" the Russian assets. Moscow has consistently condemned the plan, with Russia's Central Bank calling it illegal and reserving the right to take protective measures. The debate highlights the complex legal and economic dilemmas facing Western nations as they seek to financially support Ukraine while navigating potential repercussions for the global financial system.
