Semyon Skrepetsky, a 44-year-old Russian artist and cartoonist known for mocking Putin and Chechen leader Kadyrov, was shot dead in Biala Podlaska, Poland, near the Belarusian border. A Belarusian citizen was reportedly detained. The killing appears targeted, investigators said, but no motive has been announced. He had recently protested outside the Russian embassy in Berlin.

A Russian artist and cartoonist known for satirizing President Vladimir Putin was shot dead in eastern Poland on Monday in what Polish media describe as a possible “execution-style” killing. The victim was identified by multiple Polish broadcasters as Semyon Skrepetsky, a 44-year-old Russian citizen living in Biala Podlaska, a city close to the Belarusian border. Police confirmed that a Russian national was shot on a street near the city center Monday morning and later died. The attacker fled the scene. A Belarusian citizen was reportedly detained near the Belarusian consulate in Biala Podlaska shortly after the shooting, but authorities have not officially confirmed any arrest.

Targeted killing

Polish prosecutors and police have launched an investigation. “If someone approaches a specific person on the street and fires shots, everything indicates they planned to kill them,” police spokesman Andrzej Fijolek told Polish media, while stressing that no motive has been established. Skrepetsky’s satirical cartoons frequently mocked Putin, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, and other Russian government figures. He reportedly left Russia in 2021 fearing political persecution. Just days before his death, he participated in a protest outside the Russian embassy in Berlin, carrying artwork depicting Joseph Stalin feeding a baby Putin.

Context of tensions

The killing comes amid heightened tensions between Poland and Russia. Warsaw has accused Moscow and its ally Belarus of hybrid operations, including cyberattacks, sabotage, and migrant pressure on the EU’s eastern border. If confirmed as a targeted killing of an anti-Kremlin artist in exile, the case would draw comparisons to the 2006 murder of journalist Anna Politkovskaya.
