Arab League urges UN action against Israel's Somaliland recognition

The Arab League has condemned Israel's recognition of Somaliland as illegal and called on the UN Security Council to intervene. The pan-Arab body warns the move threatens international security and could facilitate the forced displacement of Palestinians.
The Arab League has formally called on the United Nations Security Council to take decisive action against Israel's controversial recognition of the breakaway Somali region of Somaliland. In a statement issued after an emergency meeting in Cairo on Sunday, the league described Israel's move as "illegal" and a direct threat to international peace and security, urging a firm global stance.
Condemnation and Warning Over Motives
The emergency session, held at Somalia's request, resulted in a statement that "strongly condemned" the recognition. The Arab League accused Israel of pursuing "unacceptable political, security and economic agendas" through this decision. It categorically rejected any related measures that might enable the forced displacement of Palestinians or allow Israel to establish military bases in Somaliland's ports, framing the recognition within broader regional tensions.
Call for International Mobilization
The league's permanent delegates instructed Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit to formally communicate their position to the UN Security Council presidency, the UN Secretary-General, and the African Union Commission. The objective is to mobilize international institutions to oppose what they see as a destabilizing step. This diplomatic push comes as part of a growing international backlash, with Türkiye—a key ally of Somalia—and numerous other nations in Africa and the Middle East having already condemned Israel's Friday announcement.
Context of Somaliland and Regional Stakes
Israel's recognition made it the first country to acknowledge Somaliland as a sovereign state. The region declared independence from Somalia in 1991 and has functioned as a de facto independent entity since, though it has failed to gain widespread international recognition. The Arab League's forceful response underscores the high regional stakes, aligning with Somalia's sovereignty and viewing the move as a potential catalyst for further instability in the Horn of Africa and beyond.
